Gil took several graduate-level courses to explore various topics he was interested in. These included advances topics in cryptography, coding
theory, and probability., and gave him a chance to know what he really liked and really helped when it came time to chose a field for his PhD.
During his last semester Gil started working with Prof. Igal Sason on what eventually became his PhD.
He completed his Ph.D. in Electrical engineering in January 2008. The work was performed under the supervision of Prof. Sason. The thesis title is: "Theoretical and practical aspects on the performance versus complexity tradeoff for LDPC-based codes".
Today (2012): Gil is a quantitative developer at D. E. Shaw & Co. A quantitative hedge fund in NYC.
Recommendation to Program participants: "Do not be afraid to approach faculty, present yourself and ask whether they have an interesting idea for a research project you could try. Doing research in a field could help you find out whether you are really attracted to it. Try taking graduate level courses in the basic sciences, they are usually very interesting and could give you a new outlook on problems you encounter."
