Participated in the Technion Excellence Program: Winter 2009 – 2012.
Gil Shamai received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. (both summa cum laude) from the Department of Electrical Engineering in 2012 and 2015 at the Technion, and currently doing a direct Ph.D. at the Geometric Image processing (GIP) laboratory, headed by Prof. Ron Kimmel. His research was recognized by a few awards, including the Meyer prize, Finzi prize, and Sherman Interdisciplinary Graduate School Fellowship.
His main M.Sc interests were theoretical and computational methods in metric geometry and their application to problems in manifold learning, multidimensional scaling procedures and fast geodesics computation.
In his Ph.D, most of his research was devoted to constructing and analyzing a large dataset of Histopathology images in order to test a hypothesis, that the expression pattern of molecular pathways culminate to distinctive structural phenotypes. Machine learning analyses have ultimately supplied the evidence, for the first time, that the molecular profile of cancer is embedded in the morphological structure of the tumor and its surrounding stroma, and thus can be deduced without immunohistochemistry.
Recommendation to Program participants: “Develop your intelligence in all aspects, including social and emotional ones. Oh and also, learn to dance.”
Today (2018): Gil is focusing his research on 3D face authentication and morphable models, as well as on exploring new machine learning methodologies.
Hobbies and interests: Taking part in writing the questions for the Israeli national physics Olympiad since 2010. Social dancing, teaching and managing of the Technion salsa parties, playing piano and cajon, surfing.
